Braies lake
Braies lake, in South Tyrol, is an emerald nestled between the peaks of the Dolomites. One of the places in Val Pusteria, 28 kilometers from Brunico. Located at an altitude of about 1,500 m above sea level in the picturesque Alta Pusteria, the mountain lake captivates for its color.

That are not easily forgotten: waters with green-turquoise shades, wooden boats that seem almost suspended on the surface of the water and, all around, fir forests and majestic mountains , including the Twelve Apostles and the Croda del Becco.
“The legend say, that the lake was created when savages once mined for gold here. The shepherds who lived here were jealous and tried to steal these treasures. They were unsuccessful, because the savages opened underground springs and sunk all the wealth in the underground springs.”
The lake, in every season of the year, is the starting point for walks, mountaineering, snowshoeing and even Nordic Walking enthusiasts will have the opportunity to find numerous routes in the immediate vicinity. A great choice of sporting activities awaits you
in the Braies Lake area!
Hiking and trails
You can reach the lake on foot, following the beautiful paths that pass between larch and fir trees, to fill your lungs with the balsam of the woods. The shortest route is the thematic route dedicated to Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell, a pioneer of mountaineering and the first to climb the peaks of the Braies Dolomites. Along the trail, just under 5 kilometers long, information panels tell his story and his achievements. Also to be done in the company of the little ones.
Even the excursions on foot, give great satisfaction, without too much effort. Perfect in summer, even better in autumn, when the Braies Valley is colored with foliage. The meadows turn golden, the larch trees blaze among the evergreen pines and the skies are of an incredible blue color.
To enjoy the show, the classic route is along path number 19: it starts on the shore, from the foot of the Croda del Becco, and enters the Val Foresta. You walk in the woods, with a view of Monte Nero, up to the Foresta hut. And you can still walk, on the same path, to reach the Larches Valley and the Alte Kaser hut.
Alternatively, take trail number 20 which climbs up from Lake Braies to Pra della Vacca. A little more challenging, still in the woods, at the end it offers a beautiful view of the central Alps and Val Pusteria.d can be purchased directly at the ticket office or online for a small supplement. The full ticket price is 10 euros and the reduced fare is 3.50 euros. Guided tours or audio guides are also available.
